How We Work

Our process ensures your new windows and doors are made to the highest standards:

1. Site Survey

We visit your property to take precise measurements and discuss your requirements. We check structural conditions, assess the existing windows or doors, and note any specific period details that need matching. We'll also discuss thermal performance, security needs, and ventilation requirements.

2. Design & Specification

We create technical drawings showing dimensions, opening configurations, and details like moulding profiles, glazing bars and hardware. We'll specify timber species, glass types, and finishing options. For period properties, we'll match original details while incorporating modern features where appropriate.

3. Manufacturing

All joinery is made in our workshop using traditional mortise and tenon joints, proper drainage solutions, and high-quality hardware. We use environmentally certified timber and modern weather-sealing techniques for improved insulation.

4. Installation

Our experienced team handles removal of old units and installation of the new joinery. We ensure minimal disruption to your property and proper sealing against weather and draughts.

FAQs

Bespoke windows offer exact sizing for non-standard openings, authentic period details for older properties, and better material quality than many mass-produced alternatives. While the initial cost is higher, custom windows are built specifically for your property's dimensions and style, eliminating the need for unsightly adaptors or fillers. They typically last 60+ years with proper maintenance, compared to 15-30 years for many standard units.
For most like-for-like replacements, planning permission isn't required. However, if your property is listed, in a conservation area, or if you're changing the appearance or size of openings, you'll likely need approval. We can advise on local requirements and help prepare necessary documentation. For listed buildings, we can work with conservation officers to develop acceptable specifications that preserve historic character while improving performance.
Properly maintained timber windows and doors can last 60-100+ years. Many Victorian and Georgian windows are still functioning after 150+ years. Modern timber joinery with factory-applied finishes typically needs repainting every 7-10 years, compared to every 3-5 years for traditional joinery. Regular maintenance includes cleaning, checking seals, and occasional adjustments to hardware. With periodic refurbishment, timber joinery significantly outlasts PVC alternatives, which typically need replacement after 20-30 years.
The typical timeline is 8-12 weeks from order to installation. This includes 1-2 weeks for design and approval, 6-8 weeks for manufacturing, and 1-2 weeks for scheduling installation. Complex projects involving multiple windows and doors or special finishes may take longer. Conservation projects requiring special approval can add additional time. We'll provide a specific timeline during your consultation based on your project's scale and complexity.
Yes, we specialise in creating exact matches for period properties. We take detailed measurements and photographs of existing windows, noting moulding profiles, glazing bar patterns, and hardware styles. We can recreate Victorian sash windows with traditional weights and pulleys, Georgian multi-paned designs, or Art Deco steel-look windows in timber. We balance authentic appearance with modern performance, incorporating draught-proofing and appropriate glazing while maintaining historical accuracy where visible.
